Never Throw Anything Away

Happy Sunday, folks. I know it’s been a while since I wrote in this blog, but everyday life has gotten a little bit in the way.

The good news is that writing and recording music is progressing nicely. I haven’t been able to get out to play live as much as I would like right now, but I do still have my Friday afternoon half-hour gig and my two hour gig on Twitch on Sundays. The evenings, however – while not spent in front of live audiences – have been a source of some interesting joy.

I have been focusing on trying to complete the collection of 10 to 12 songs that will become the next album. Interestingly enough, at least three of the songs have come from discarded or forgotten ideas recorded a couple of years ago. These were a little home jam sessions that I set up where I would program a drum pattern into the recording software and then just play guitar rhythms or riffs. And coming back and listening to them a couple of years later, those little rhythms then became inspiration for new songs or things I wanted to say.

It really is wonderful to be able to come back to a half-finished idea (or even a half-started idea) and then finally hear the story that was struggling to be told, the song that wanted to be sung. And if past-me can be inspiration for future-me, then that’s certainly something to celebrate!

So for all of you creative sorts out there, don’t ever, ever throw anything out! (I know I’m encouraging the hoarders amongst us, but I do not care). Never throw anything out. You never know when it’s going to be your next critical spark!
