Well, after a nice little break, I think perhaps it’s time to start filling the catalogue once again. For those who are not yet aware, February Album writing month is a thing.
The challenge is to write 14 songs in 28 days. I have never hit that mark, but my songs “Heart of a Young Man,” “It’s Alright,” and “Apropos of Nothing” have all come from past FAWMs. It’s just a great kick to remember to create again, and there are all sorts of opportunities to share work in progress and even to collaborate with others.
Find out more at https://fawm.org/.
I’ve already got a few things queued up, including “No, Jim. No,” “YEG,” and “I Read It in the News.”
Update: 7 songs written and demo’d as of Feb 10: No Jim No, I Read It In The News, YEG, And God Laughs, Checked In To Hell, Have a Good Day, and Burn the Ships. (And you can see them here!)
Stay tuned … and even maybe join! The website is supposed to open today (Jan 26) for registration.
Also, and unrelated, I was looking through some old quotes that I had pinned, and I found this from Henry Rollins. For those of you who read my Hiraeth blog last month, the thought may sound familiar. It also put me in mind of “Home,” which I released on my Alone in a Crowded Place EP a while ago. I just thought that it was an absolutely lovely piece of writing and wanted to share it with you:
“Someday, I would like to go home. The exact location of this place, I don’t know, but someday I would like to go. There would be a pleasing feeling of familiarity and a sense of welcome in everything I saw. People would greet me warmly. They would remind me of the length of my absence and the thousands of miles I had travelled in those restless years, but mostly, they would tell me that I had been missed, and that things were better now I had returned. Autumn would come to this place of welcome, this place I would know to be home. Autumn would come and the air would grow cool, dry and magic, as it does that time of the year. At night, I would walk the streets but not feel lonely, for these are the streets of my home town. These are the streets that I had thought about while far away, and now I was back, and all was as it should be. The trees and the falling leaves would welcome me. I would look up at the moon, and remember seeing it in countries all over the world as I had restlessly journeyed for decades, never remembering it looking the same as when viewed from my hometown.”
See you all soon (with some new tunes in tow)
-Chris
